Sometimes you meet someone and are drawn in immediately by their energy and spirit. That is what happened when I met Eleanor. She has a welcoming smile and effusive nature. While in the grocery store check out line, we hit up a quick conversation surrounding styrofoam coolers and the need for sugar. I ended up giving her my business card and offering a quick beach photoshoot while in Luquillo, Puerto Rico. When I’m traveling and don’t have any personal connections, I have to get out of my comfort zone. This is a daunting but creative way to find people to model for me. It allows me to build my portfolio and explore new places! Her partner, Andrew traveled to Puerto Rico with her to escape the east coast weather for a bit. So I’m glad they were convinced to let me be their Playa Azul Puerto Rico Beach Photographer.
Luckily, our schedules aligned for us to meet at the beach the next evening. My family had spent the day at Playa Azul and I loved the way the beach curved around and was lined with palm trees. Evenings at the beach are absolutely gorgeous and the lighting was beautiful for their photography session. This beach was also pretty empty during the day, with families and couples spread out enjoying the waves and sand. It got a bit busier as the evening rolled in, but with some creativity (and a little photoshop), we were able to remove most of the background distractions.
As a traveling wedding photographer, I’m able to adapt to new lighting situations and locations. It is a good skill to have because all of the settings are unique. Where the sun sets and whether there are tall buildings, trees, or mountains to create shade; or if the landscape is wide open at sunset make a big difference. Mostly, I love having the opportunity to meet people in a place they are newly exploring, or that has become a precious part of their love story.
