As a Tetons family photographer, I love when families choose iconic locations like Schwabacher Landing for their sessions. This beautiful family of five visited in late July and created memories they’ll treasure forever against the stunning backdrop of the Teton Range.
This family nailed their outfit coordination! The three girls wore dresses in blues and whites while the boys both chose white shirts paired with shorts. This casual summer vibe was absolutely perfect for a July session.
When planning your family’s outfits, you don’t need everyone matching exactly. Instead, choose a color palette of 2-3 colors and let each person pick something they feel comfortable in. Neutrals like white, cream, and tan work beautifully as your base, then add in one accent color—like the blues this family chose.
Consider the location too. For mountain settings, earth tones, soft blues, and whites complement the natural surroundings without competing with them. Avoid neon colors or busy patterns that distract from faces. The girls’ different dress styles—one in a flowy white dress, another in a patterned blue—show how variety within your color scheme creates dimension. Comfortable shoes matter too, especially at locations with dirt paths like Schwabacher Landing. These sandals worked perfectly for walking.
Here’s a brilliant tip this family shared: they take their Christmas card photo during their summer vacation. This approach saves stress during the busy holiday season and lets them share a special place they visited throughout the year. Planning ahead means you’re not scrambling in November when everyone else is trying to book sessions!
During every family photography session, I make sure to capture a full range of images so you have options for every use. We start with traditional posed shots—everyone looking at the camera, smiling together. These are perfect for those Christmas cards and framed prints for grandparents.
But we don’t stop there. I guide you through candid moments like walking hand-in-hand, looking at each other instead of the camera, and genuine interactions between siblings. These often become favorites because they capture real connection. We also photograph different groupings: all five together, just the kids, parents with each child individually, and just mom and dad. This variety ensures you have images for every room in your home and different purposes throughout the year.
The magic happens when we mix structure with spontaneity. After getting those important posed shots, we play and explore, which is exactly how we ended up with this family jumping off a bench and laughing together!
