Taking these Utah couple portraits for Caidin and Haylie was a big deal for me. For all of the inquiring minds, these two are NOT engaged. But my brother asked me if I could take some photos of him and his girlfriend, and I of course said yes! I surprised my husband with a trip to Utah for our anniversary, and it was a blast! While we were there I did pictures for my sister and her family as well! Eagle Mountain is always a crowd favorite for beautiful scenery with a breathtaking mountain view.
Throughout their photo shoot we were able to play around with different lighting. These Utah couple portraits are a good example of how shooting several hours before sunset looks. Some people love this lighting and other people hate it. I personally don’t mind it! Sometimes this kind of lighting can really wash out light colored hair. Which can open the door for some of the bigger problems to come in. But I feel like as long as we’re strategic, we’ll get to see lots of magic.
During this lighting, we have to be strategic in the poses and angles we use. This includes, how we are placing people, helping to ensure the lighting is working for us. Often times this is lighting that I see on lots of wedding days. Ceremonies tend to happen earlier in the evening or late in the afternoon when the sun is still several hours from setting.
Although they’re not engaged, I treated them like any other engaged couple! I wasn’t sure how mushy they’d really want to be in front of the camera. But I just told them if there was something that they didn’t want pictures of, or a pose they didn’t like, to just let me know! Communication is key during a photoshoot.
I’ll let you in on a secret that’s exactly what I say to all of my engagement couples and wedding couples too! I’m so happy with how their photos turned out and that they were willing to do my favorite pose of all time which is the vertical stack. Just like the image where she’s sitting on his shoulders! I think that this it is always super fun and adventurous but also a great way to get couples laughing and loosened up!
