Throughout the years, wedding traditions have continued to change and evolve. However, this wedding tradition is one that I would love to see stick around for years to come. The old, new, borrowed and blue tradition is one that has brought together the past and present. One that has been uniting families and bringing together those we’ve lost. This wedding tradition is one that is sometimes overlooked. Nevertheless, one that is incredibly sentimental and special. Throughout my years of being a Jackson Hole wedding photographer, I have seen so many traditions, and this one I’m obsessed with.

A Wedding Tradition That Has to be at Your Event

This wedding tradition of old, new, borrowed, and blue goes back centuries from an old English rhyme. Like all good traditions, it has its meaning and is said to prevent the bride from fertility complications later in life. Like most traditions this one’s meaning may seem far-fetched. But I love it for the history and love it brings to the event. Having this wedding tradition at your Jackson Hole elopement would be the cherry on top of the event! Let’s dive into it.

Something Old

First, the something old portion of the tradition. The Knot says, “something old” represents continuity, and contemporary couples use this as a chance to wear a sentimental piece of jewelry or item of clothing belonging to an older relative.” Something old is a portion of the tradition that I hold near to my heart, and always look forward to. Generally brides look to grandparents, parents, or in-laws for something meaningful to wear on their wedding day and bring in the something old factor. This is a great way to honor your loved ones who have passed on, they’ll be able to play a special role on your big day.

Something New

Next, something new is a way to incorporate something you love. “Offers optimism for the future,” and is a fun way for you to bring a new item into your day, and even turn it into a family heirloom! Your something new could be anything like, earrings, shoes, or even a bracelet. Consider the item as a way to create something new for your family and future children to have on their big day.

Something Borrowed

After that, the something borrowed aspect of this wedding tradition. This portion of the tradition is another great way to bring family into your day. The Knot continues, “by borrowing something from a happily married friend or relative, the bride or couple ensures a little of their good fortune rubs off on them.” Furthermore, the couple is able to bring relatives together, celebrating the journey they have been on throughout their lives. Bringing together family is one of the most important parts of any wedding day.

Wedding Tradition – Something Blue

Lastly, something blue traditionally the “the color blue stands for love, purity and fidelity” Brides in the past have used the something blue in their garters, or even as an accent in their bouquet. Even wearing blue shoes! This wedding tradition is one that is full of tradition and good fortune for the newly married couple.
