Seow and Lee hired me for their fall family portraits while they were vacationing in Grand Teton National Park. They have a tradition to do their yearly photos while they’re on vacation, and I love this idea! I think that families everywhere should adopt this practice of taking photos in a new place while visiting national parks, or wherever they may be! These fall family portraits are some of my favorite at Schwabacher’s Landing.

Choosing Family Picture Outfits

Family sessions can be tricky to coordinate everybody’s outfits. This family had a good mix of patterns and solid. They had a variety of colors to keep things simple. This also allows families not to be too matchy matchy. They are still coordinated while including differences among the outfits.  I suggest a mix of patterns, solid, texture, and layers so that everybody has different elements that set them up apart in the photo. Having textures and solids mixed in with the patterns also helps the photo to not feel too busy in the setting. You’re also putting people right next to each other in a family photo so having variety is good.

Mixing solids and patterns in fall family portraits

As a general guideline when I’m photographing a family, I won’t put two colors or patterns together. So, if there are two people that have patterns and two people that have solids I will try to break up those patterns a little bit. This gives the patterns and textures some space so they don’t clash. This is also the same for people who are wearing the same color. I do not recommend that the whole family wears the exact same color unless you are adding in some small print details or texture details. This family had a lot of prints in their outfits, but it worked for them!
