The blog is a collection of wedding and elopement highlights sharing your beautiful stories. It also includes wedding planning tips and inspiration.
Let’s be honest. If I wrote down my vows right now, I would struggle to know what to say! I’d want to convey how much my husband means to me (or in your case, your fiance/fiancee), but sometimes it’s just hard to put that into words! I’m sharing a few tips on How to Write Your Vows, but these same ideas could also be used for those special toasts during the reception! These can be put in any order, and as you figure out how to write your vows, you’ll probably create a few drafts. And whether you chose to include vows in your ceremony or plan to share them in private, it’s always a tender moment.
Alright, let’s start with the basics when it comes to vow writing. Tell them what you love about them! This one feels like a no-brainer, right? But sometimes we know we love someone so much and pinpointing those can be hard. But think about the things you love most about them. What personality traits or characteristics do they have that you adore? What is your favorite thing about them? How have they blessed your life? If you could describe them in 1-3 words, what would those words be? Now include those in your vows!
This is always a hit. Sharing a favorite memory the two of you hold is a great way to bring the day full circle. Maybe it’s a story about how you met, how you felt falling in love, or that time you tried something new together.
This is always sure to be a tear jerker. You have so much life and love before you! What do you imagine for your future together? What hopes and dreams do you share together and are looking forward to experiencing as a married couple? This is a great place to start if you’re still feeling unsure of how to write your vows.
All your hopes and dreams for the future might not turn out as you planned. You may want to share promises of how you’ll tackle anything that comes your way together. As a couple who has been through a cancer diagnosis, pregnancy loss, financial stress, job changes, and just the everyday of life, it’s nice to know that the promises we made on our wedding day are still intact! You’re planning to spend the rest of your lives together, and that’s going to come with challenges! But you can assure your loved one you’re there through thick and thin.
Maybe you’re still feeling stumped. Get some inspiration from the pros, and let them do (some) of the talking for you. Think about including song lyrics or part of a poem in your vows if there is something meaningful to you.
You can always keep it light if that’s more your style. Sharing a favorite memory, what you love about your partner, your hopes and dreams, and making promises can make everyone a bit teary eyed. It’s okay to add in some laughs. This might come naturally as you share all those other things too!
Above all, keep your vows sincere and true to who you are. Eloquent words can be nice, but they’re just words. Make sure you’ve got feeling behind them all!
Now that you’ve got seven tips on how to write your vows, get off the internet and go write your first draft! Remember, they don’t have to be perfect. Your loved one will appreciate your effort, eloquent or not! You’re about to set off on the adventure of a lifetime, let me document it all for you!
