Erik and Sara hired me for their Idaho Falls engagement and wedding photography and were so much fun! I was literally laughing their entire engagement session, and I feel like we just vibed so well together. During our session Sara and I also realized that we have friends/family in common. Her cousin and my husband are really good friends from high school. It’s such a small world. From the very beginning, I realized that Erik and I have a common love of funny GIFS and are close enough in age to have watched some of the same TV shows growing up. We especially bonded over the fact that at some point in our lives, we each owned POGS. I actually have no idea where I got my Pogs (also known as milk caps), but I remember owning a handful of them and comparing them with my friends. So fun little fact, is that those were popular in the early to mid 90’s!

Engagement Session in the Snow

East Idaho has had snow day after snow day this year. I don’t mind the snow one bit (okay that might be an exaggeration) until I have to start driving in it. I was so grateful it wasn’t snowing for this morning photo shoot. We actually had a decently warm day at only 18 degrees, but with some beautiful sun. I prefer to shoot in open shade anyways, so this made for some really beautiful light the first half of our session in Idaho Falls.  Freeman park has a plethora of trees which makes it ideal for winter engagement sessions. The trees add color and vibrancy to the snowy landscape and help the couple to stand out. This is one of my favorite locations to shoot Idaho Falls engagement photos. Beaverdick Park in Rexburg is also one of my favorite locations year round and is where we spent the second half of our photo session! The park has a variety of tree species which offer different color schemes year round.

Traditional and Fun Engagement Posing

I love seeing how couples interact with each other. Something I’ve been practicing for years now is how to allow couples to have the space to be themselves while still giving them enough guidance to be comfortable in front of the camera. One thing I’ve found is to start with some of the more traditional poses that moms and dads love, and then move into more prompted movement. These careful prompts help couples know what to do, but then gives them the freedom of how to do it! The same prompt will look different on each couple. There are definitely times I’m more hands on in helping a couple pose, but it’s also fun to just let them have fun!
